When we're blogging, one of the things we don't tend to think about is the state of our database. As with the oil in our car, as long as it works, we tend to ignore it.

Recently Habari updated it's administrative code to use a new interface. The new interface relies much more heavily on javascript than the old one did, which allows it to pull off some pretty snifty tricks. One of these is on the entries page, where a list of all the posts you have written is displayed.

The three plugins I had written - MetaDescription, MetaTitle, and MetaKeywords - are no longer available from this site, nor are they supported.

I've already updated the MetaTitle plugin. Andy at Digging in a Habari sandpit asked that it have the option of working even if the theme's template doesn't have an html title tag. I've just released the third leg of a series of SEO optimization plugins for Habari - MetaTitle.

As with the meta keywords tag, your page's meta description tag doesn't help your search engine rankings much, but it does allow you some control over how the page is described in search engine results. Many search engines (though not Google), will use what you have put in the meta description tag on the search results page.

This past weekend the Habari community released Habari 0.4.1.

One problem I've been having with Habari is that the xml-rpc mechanism relies on mbstring support being compiled in to PHP. Unfortunately, my host, A Small Orange, for some reason didn't have mbstring support in PHP 5, though they do include it in PHP 4.
